Gmail is the ultimate free email service which just about everyone can use, anywhere in the world. It can be easily accessed on a desktop, tablet or smartphone. This guide will help you learn how to use Gmail in the shortest amount of time. Let’s start.
The Gmail Inbox
There are three tabs of the inbox by default. All of the general incoming emails are held by the primary tab. Then, there is the Social or Promotions tab which Google would identify when any other emails are received. Emails are normally organized by category which can be easily customized and additional tabs can be added as desired.
Use Category Tabs
Whenever, a new email is received, simply click on the label icon on the top menu and select a category or simply create one for that specific email. Click on the + tab to the far right of the existing tags back in the main inbox and a list of current email categories would pop up. Select new category that you created and it will also show up in your inbox as a new tab.
Compose an Email
Click on the red Compose box on the upper left corner of your inbox to send your first email. It is one of the more feature-filled and is a powerful section which is why it is important to get more familiar with it. Firstly, although the composer window opens up on the lower right corner of the screen, it can be easily opened up on a new window by simply holding the Shift key and pressing on the resize arrows on the upper right of the composer window.
Format Email Text
The email has the standard To, CC, BCC and the subject field which you must be familiar with if you have ever used any other web client. You can easily format the email text just like you normally would on Microsoft Word. Change the formatting, style, font size or create bullet lists and more. At the bottom of the email pop up, you would notice items which are as follows.
- Google Drive Icon for inserting files from Google Drive.
- Paperclip Icon for including an attachment.
- The chain icon to insert a hyperlink/
- The camera icon to insert a photo.
- And the smiley icon for inserting an emotion.
Select a Theme
Customize your Gmail inbox by selecting a theme. Choose from a variety of different themes besides the same boring inbox. In order to select a new theme, simply click on the cog icon at the upper right corner with Settings written on it. From the list, select Themes. Pick a theme and Select it and then save it. The entire inbox background would change to the selected theme.
Trash, Spam, Sent Mail and More
The rest of the email folders will be found along the left side of the inbox. You can even create new labels where you can move the messages.
